Well, maybe not that poor. If nothing else, she's proven it's possible for an American Idol winner to have a career. But that's not what I'm referring to. No, instead, I want to draw attention to a couple of instances of plagiarism in her music! (gasp!)
Halo vs. Already Gone
In this instance, it seems that Kelly is probably the guilty party. While both albums were recorded in 2008, Beyoncé released Halo a good 6 months before Kelly's knockoff hit came out. Guess it doesn't really matter. It certainly didn't hurt record sales of either song. Already Gone was hugely popular on the radio while we were in Asia (December), and Halo made it into a mash-up on Glee for heaven's sake!
But don't take my word for it. Go ahead and listen for yourself. To me there's no denying these two songs sound alike. In fact, I often sing the opening lyrics to Halo during the instrumental intro to Already Gone (i.e. before Kelly starts singing). It fits so perfectly that, if I were Beyoncé's manager, I'd be looking into who leaked the music to Kelly's people.
But, what goes around comes around…
My Life Would Suck Without You vs. Heaven Can Wait.
Since the previous two songs were recoded around the same time, it would be tough to make a legal case for plagiarism, but this second instance is far more clear cut. In this case, Kelly's album was recorded in 2008, and the song My Life Would Suck Without You was released in January 2009. That would have given We the Kings plenty of time to hear the hit single before they went into the studio to record Heaven Can Wait.
I thought maybe – because this one is just so blatant – that maybe the same songwriter was involved, but that's not the case, according to wikipedia.
With this one, it's the chorus. And I just can't help myself. As soon as the chorus of Heaven Can Wait comes on, I automatically sing the lyrics to the Kelly song. It's just that close!
Well, maybe this will be a lesson to Kelly not to steal Beyoncé's music. Hmmm. I wonder if Beyoncé was invovlved in the recording of Heaven Can Wait. I can just hear her: "I'll teach that B!tch to steal my music. She can't mess with me! I'm Sasha Fierce! <finger snap>"
Heh heh. I have far too much time on my hands.
