I haven’t been feeling the Christmas spirit. It just hasn’t seemed like there’s been time – what with work, working out, and trying to find a few hours to sleep (I haven’t even found time to blog!) – to stop and enjoy the few things about the holidays that I do enjoy: Family, food, and (even though it’s ubiquitous in the shopping malls) Christmas music.
I don’t know if it’s the fact that our Christmas shopping is just about done (other than a few stuffers) or that we now have a blanket of white across the city, or if it’s just that it’s getting close enough to look forward to the upcoming work break – whatever the reason, I’m starting to get giddy.
Actually, I can pinpoint when the change occurred. It was during my walk to work this morning. I was listening to the latest coverville podcast – featuring the annual batch of Christmas songs – and as I heard these new (or new to me) versions of songs like All I Want for Christmas (The Puppini Sisters), The Little Drummer Boy (byt he Priests Featuring Shane McGowan of the Pogues) and a great cover of Christmas Time is Here (a free download form Loch and Key), my mood lifted. I looked around me at the snow and I didn’t feel the dread I usually do. I actually felt Joy.
And then came the topper: A fantastic version of the 12 Days of Christmas by the a capella group Straight No Chaser. It’s so fun and carefree – and has a great little twist for the 12th day of Christmas that had me breaking into a grin that stretched from ear to ear. Good thing I had a scarf covering my face or my fellow commuters would have been freaked out.
